WEEK SEVEN - LIGHT AND SCALE

Title: Bowen Hills - Light scape
#Oneperday2017

Technique: Photograph taken with an Iphone 6 camera, no flash. Edited in Adobe Lightroom.

Process: The image was taken at 9pm at Bowen Hills overlocking the overpasses and the mountains in the background. The image was edited to highlight the different sources of light (roads, sky and building lights). This was completed by increasing the exposure as a whole image, and then increasing the saturation and luminance of the yellow, orange and red tones. The contrast was altered and black tones increased to emphasise the light and send the buildings and mountains into the background. This contrast between light and dark also emphasises the lights. To finish, an exposure mask was applied to the sky, to brighten this section without lightening the rest of the photograph.

Reasoning: This location was chosen as the different sources of light (roads, sky and building lights) creates a dramatic image. The contrast between the man-made and natural elements also creating an interesting image.

Reflection: The aim of this image was to highlight the different sources, colours and brightness of light in the environment, and the editing of the image allowed this to be successful. Unfortunately, the Iphone camera did not take an accurate image, as the light and clarity was decreased compared to a better camera.

Title: Candles
#Oneperday2017

Technique: Photograph taken with Iphone 6 camera, no flash. Edited in Adobe Photoshop.

Process: Eight candles were lit and arranged in the above order. There was a strong breeze during the photographing stage, however, this was utilised to show the movement of light. A white piece of paper was placed behind the candles to create a blank background, but to also allow for reflections of the light. Once imported into Photoshop, the image was lightened and a Gaussian blur was applied to the image. The image was duplicated 4 times, and the opacity was altered. Each layer was then staggered to the right to create the repetition seen in the final image.

Reasoning: The candles were used to show the movement and reflection of light. The candles also represent impermanence as once they have burnt out they can no longer be used, which is symbolic of natural light as the sun sets and rises each day. The image was staggered to create movement and highlight the reflection of the light.

Reflection: The differing layers and transparencies in the image improves the original image by creating a dramatic and mysterious effect. Experimentation during the photo shoot of the candles demonstrates how a simple alteration in the image frame, such as a piece of paper, can greatly effect the outcome and meaning of an image.

Title: Sparkle
#Oneperday2017

Technique: Photograph taken with an Iphone 6 camera, no flash. No editing.

Process: For the final image, two sparkler sticks were lit and photographed. Before the final image was taken, a lot of experimentation with camera settings and sparkler movement and placement were explored. To begin, a flash was used on the camera, however this lightened the surrounding areas around the sparkler, so details in the light refraction and brightness were lost. It also meant that surrounding objects become distracting to the intention purpose. Experimentation with the sparklers involved multiple vs one sparkler, moving vs still sparkers and positioning sparklers in different distances and angles from the camera. The chosen image was a result of two sparklers lit and held still in place, and the photograph taken from eye level from the side.

Reasoning: The sparklers were chosen to play with light as they create abstract shapes and random flickers of light that would be appropriate for this theme. The image of non-moving sparklers was chosen because the photographs of the ones moving lost the detail and brightness seen in this image.

Reflection: The final image is very effective at representing light in a different way. Although only a single image, it alludes to movement and change, and creates an exciting picture. This image was also chosen because of the other sources of light seen. The flame and the red reflections add another dimension to the image.

Title: Light and Movement
#Oneperday2017

Technique: Video with an Iphone 6 camera. No editing

Process: As with the above image and experimentation, this video shows two sparklers held in a still position whilst videoed.

Reasoning: The video was taken to emphasise the movement, spraying of light and sound of this experiment. Adding these other elements creates a multi-sensory display of light.

Reflection: The speed of the movement of light and the burning of the sparklers creates excitement and anticipation in the video. Having a video of moving sparklers could have added another level of interest and shown the ray of light left after the object has moved. The addition of sound also adds another dimension that evokes memories for the viewers.

Title: Playing with scale
#Oneperday2017

Technique: Modelling, hand drawing, photography and digital editing.

Process: 3mm MDF was laser cut into different geometric shapes. They were then super glued together to create a shelter like structure and photographed with an Iphone camera, using flash. Photographs of people were taken and traced to creating models of people. The two images were edited in  photoshop by removing the backgrounds and arranging as in the image. The people were altered to 90% opacity as at full opacity were too dominant in the image. A ground was then digitally added using the square tool to give the space grounding.

Reasoning: The modelling was another method of experimentation that is used to show scale and detail in interior and architecture practice, which is replicated in a simple form in this image. The use of figures gives a building or site a sense of scale and activity.

Reflection: Whilst the image plays with scale, adding more elements such as trees and light would have produced a more interesting scene.

Title: Playing with Scale
#Oneperday2017

Technique: Photography with digital manipulation.

Process: Two photographs were taken. The first is the leaf which was taken with an Iphone 6 camera with flash (indoors). The second image was taken with a Canon IXUS 185 digital camera, no flash (outdoors). The first image was edited to emphasise the contrast in light and shadow and to exaggerate the colour. The second image was cropped so that the background was removed, leaving the person seperate. These two layers were then combined and the size of each altered to distort the normal scale of these two objects.

Reasoning: These two objects were chosen as the are normally seen in the opposite scale, with the leaf much smaller than the person. The person was placed inside the hole in the leaf, as if she is flying through to create a playful image that reinforces the play with scale.

Reflection: The final image is a fun example of how images can create a distorted sense of reality, and create a completely new environment or world. If both images were taken of a night time with a flash, this would have allowed them to blend together more cohesively, creating a more believable image.
